Grow food not lawns.

Or in areas where food growth is harmful to the area, had rock yards. They can be just as beautiful. I live in Nevada and having a lawn is a terrible waste of water. The city of Reno pays people to get rid of their grass lawns and have rock yards. 

Do what is right for the ecosystem around you.

This is actually a spectacular idea.  Various forms of food will grow in any climate (just about) on this planet, and I can’t think of one in the US at least that won’t.  it may not sustain the family alone, but it will certainly help for a good chunk of the year.

I can even see neighborhood farmer’s markets evolving from this… assuming there is no governmental interference.
